AMC Commodore VK

Commodore VK, a special edition of Australian MUSCLE CAR, celebrates this much-loved Holden model – the iconic factory Holden models, the Brock-HDT performance race versions and touring car racers that followed.

Among Holden fanciers, the Commodore VK is probably the most loved of all the early-series Commodore models. It was distinguished from the earlier VB-C-H series by its new six-window design, and it was the basis for what’s surely the most iconic of all HDT Peter Brock Commodores, the 1985 Group A SS ‘Blue Meanie’. The VK was the Commodore of the mid-‘80s, and in motorsport that meant straddled the home-grown Group C touring car formula and the brave new world of International Group C.

In 1984 Brock stunned the motorsport world with the new day-glo liveried HDT Commodore VK Group C touring cars. With their huge wings and front spoilers, flared guards and super-fat rubber, these ‘last of the big bangers’ Holden racers looked like winners standing still. Sure enough, they did the job on the track, culminating in a historic one-two at Bathurst for the HDT.

The Commodore VK was less successful in the new Group A the following year, but in 1986 Allan Grice and Graeme Bailey shared the latter’s Chickadee Commodore to Bathurst that year. Prior to that, both Grice and the HDT had raced their VKs in the European Touring Car Championship, in what was the first time a Holden had competed in touring car racing in the northern hemisphere.
