This special issue of Australian MUSCLE CAR looks back fondly at the Charger: the different models, the racing, and how Chrysler’s Australian design team turned what started as a hastily cobbled together last-minute coupe concept into an all-time classic – and of course, that cheeky marketing campaign.

This special issue of Australian MUSCLE CAR looks back fondly at the Charger: the different models, the racing, and how Chrysler’s Australian design team turned what started as a hastily cobbled together last-minute coupe concept into an all-time classic – and of course, that cheeky marketing campaign. Hey Charger!

The Valiant Charger is an all-time Aussie muscle car classic. With its snarling, triple-carbied straight-six engine, it was one of the fastest – and best looking – high-performance six-cylinder-powered two-door/four-seater coupes in the world in the 1970s.

In fire-breathing E38 and E49 form, the Charger was bred especially for Bathurst, where it took on the Ford Falcon GTHOs and Torana XU-1s in the Mountain classic. This was that brief but golden era of the Great Race in the early ’70s that saw Chrysler make it a three-way contest for outright honours on the Mountain: the battle of the ‘Big Three’ at Bathurst.

Ultimate racetrack success eluded the Charger drivers, but they went close in 1972 in Chrysler’s final year in Australian touring car racing. The spectacular big, sleek Valiant coupes could hold their own against the V8 Falcons and nimble Toranas, just as they were also fan favourites. This Australian-designed and Australian-made muscle coupe continues to enjoy a strong following more than 50 years later.

It’s also a household Australian name, thanks to Chrysler’s quirky TV ads featuring the iconic ‘peace’ sign with the catch-phrase ‘Hey Charger!’
