This special edition of Australian MUSCLE CAR magazine pays tribute to the late, great Allan Moffat. A celebration of a true Australian sporting legend, and a man widely seen as the ultimate Ford racing star, even 40 years after Moffat retired from racing.
Just as Moffat was Australia’s original Ford racing hero, the Fords he raced were stars in themselves: the famous Trans-Am Mustang in which he first rose to prominence, followed by the legendary Bathurst-winning Falcon GTHOs and later Falcon Hardtops. Moffat, the man, was a complex personality. With his brooding intensity, which many misunderstood as arrogance, and seemingly unparalleled determination, Moffat could be an explosive and polarising figure. You either loved him or you hated him – but no one could ignore him.
In the Mustang, Moffat’s battles with Bob Jane’s Camaro and Norm Beechey’s Monaro electrified fans in the early 1970s. At the same time Moffat was writing a whole separate chapter in Australian touring car racing history, fighting against Holden and Peter Brock, at the wheel of Falcon GTHO in Series Production racing. Moffat triumphed at Bathurst in 1970 and ’71, but conceded to Brock the following year after an epic battle in wet conditions. Moffat got his revenge on Brock in 1973 with the new Falcon XA Hardtop, and then four years later came the most famous of all Ford’s victories on the Mountain, the ‘1-2 form finish’.
Then in the 1980s Moffat changed course and switched to Mazda, before returning to Ford in 1987 – and very nearly winning a fifth and final Bathurst 1000 in 1988. In between that Moffat briefly teamed up with Brock. Ford fans might have winced at the sight of Moffat racing a Holden, but it was fitting to see these two towering greats together in the one team. In the history of the Bathurst 1000, Moffat and Brock stand above all others. The pair were great rivals for Bathurst glory right through the 1970s: in fact, with the intensity of their on-track battles, they shaped the Bathurst 1000 and helped make it the ‘Great Race’ we know today.
